Gyakie “WAKA WAKA”: The Statement Closer

“WAKA WAKA” is track 6 and the closer on Gyakie’s My Diary EP, released July 22, 2022. At 2:48 minutes, it flips the script completely — a ragga-esque, dancehall-leaning record where Gyakie gets bold, brash, and unapologetic.

Produced by Sosa, the track is built on a bouncy, percussive rhythm that lets Gyakie switch from singing to rapping in her indigenous language. She called it “the statement song” and “the head of the diary.” Unlike the love songs before it, this one isn’t about romance. It’s about the industry, her experiences, and what’s coming next.

“There was a different attitude of Gyakie here. This is not a love song. It’s very vibrant, very wild, very rude. Rude but classy. I was getting everything off my chest, and it’s a different type of Gyakie in this song. You might be like, ‘What? Who got Gyakie pissed?’ You did.”

Pulse Nigeria picked up on that shift, noting how Gyakie “displays a terrifying range of her talent in a Ghanaian trademark marriage of Hip hop/Dancehall” and delivers “high-grade chest-thumping bars” while still interspersing melody. It’s her showing range beyond the soft, velvety R&B she’s known for.

On My Diary, “WAKA WAKA” works as the release. The EP opens intimate with “Audience,” moves through heartbreak, love, and flirtation, then ends with Gyakie reclaiming her narrative. It’s the moment she steps out of the diary and into the industry conversation on her own terms.
