Gyakie “Something”: Banku-Inspired Club Bounce

“SOMETHING” is track 5 on Gyakie’s My Diary EP, released July 22, 2022. At 3:08 minutes, it’s the EP’s flirty, dancefloor moment — built on a Banku-inspired rhythm and produced by P.Priime.

Unlike the detailed storytelling on “Far Away” or “For My Baby,” Gyakie kept this one loose. She told Shazam it was a straight freestyle: “I literally just got in front of the mic, and I just started putting out the bars. I think that happens most of the time, especially if I love the beat so, so much. If I do, the lyrics are quite easy to come”. The result is playful, confident, and made for the club.

The Banku rhythm gives it that Ghanaian bounce, with Pidgin and local cadence flowing naturally over the beat. It’s Gyakie showing she’s comfortable outside of R&B and jazz — she can hold her own on a party record without losing her melodic touch.

On My Diary, “SOMETHING” breaks up the heavier emotional tracks and adds movement before the EP closes with “WAKA WAKA.” The NATIVE noted it as one of the love renditions that “convey the fragile matters of the heart in a simple yet honest manner,” even if the lyrics aren’t as detailed as the rest.

If “Audience” is Gyakie thanking God and “Far Away” is her dealing with heartbreak, “SOMETHING” is her having fun again. It’s short, catchy, and shows the range that makes My Diary more than just a slow burn.
