Skyface SDW Gets Nostalgic & Real on “2016”
Skyface SDW slows down on “2016” and gives us a different side. After “THE MENACE II EP” was all aggression, this one is reflection. He’s basically opening his diary over a beat.
The production is moody Afro-drill with melodic guitar and soft pads. Not the hard 808s from the EP. This beat gives him space to talk. His flow is calmer, more melodic – almost singing at points. You can hear the emotion in his voice.
*The story*
“2016” is Skyface looking back. He’s talking about where he started, the struggles, the friends he lost, the promises he made to himself back in 2016. That year becomes a symbol for “the beginning” – broke, hungry, but full of dreams.
He mentions hustle, betrayal, and how much has changed since then. It’s not a sad song though. It’s more like “I made it this far” energy. Ghanaian street kids will relate hard because we all have a “2016” year where life was tough but you were determined.
*Why it stands out*
Skyface proves he’s not just “drill menace”. He can be vulnerable too. The contrast between this and “THE MENACE II” shows range. One minute he’s threatening opps, next minute he’s thanking God for growth.
If you want bars + feelings, “2016” is that record. Perfect for late night thinking.
