Kylian Mbappe has etched his name into World Cup history. The France captain is now the first player ever to win the Golden Boot in back-to-back tournaments, and the first in both men’s and women’s World Cup history to do it twice.

He confirmed it with a brace in France’s 6-4 loss to England in the third-place play-off in Miami, ending the tournament on 10 goals.

Mbappe hits double figures
The 27-year-old was in sensational form. His 10 goals make him the first player since Germany’s Gerd Muller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup.

Only Just Fontaine with 13 in 1958 and Sandor Kocsis with 11 in 1954 have scored more at one edition.

That double against England also took Mbappe to 22 World Cup goals, making him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He went past Lionel Messi, who ended 2026 with 8 goals and 4 assists.

After the match Mbappe said: “I’m just trying to help my team score every time. It’s for sure that when you score that many goals in the World Cup, it elevates you to certain levels. But I would have liked to not be the top scorer in history, but play tomorrow’s match.”

He is also the first player to win back-to-back Golden Boots.
