Ghanaian singer King Promise says his focus is on competing with himself and becoming better at his craft instead of comparing himself to other artistes.

Speaking on Joy FM Drive Time with Lexis Bill on Tuesday, October 27, the Terminator hitmaker said he has never been in competition with anyone and prefers to stay in his own lane.

According to him, rivalry in the music industry is mostly created by fans who compare artistes based on awards, popularity and milestones, even when the artistes themselves do not see it that way.

He explained that when artistes are at the top of their careers and doing similar things, fans often pit them against each other, but he chooses to see the success of others as inspiration rather than competition.

King Promise noted that seeing global stars achieve big things motivates him to aim higher. He mentioned Nigerian superstar Wizkid selling out the O2 Arena in London as an example, saying such feats make him believe that Ghanaian artistes can also achieve similar milestones.

He said his mindset has always been about what to do next and how to move to the next level, rather than settling on past achievements.

The singer, whose real name is Gregory Bortey Newman, also opened up about his long friendship with Mr Eazi, which dates back to around 2012 before either of them had a major hit. He said their friendship was natural and not built around music collaborations.

King Promise credited Mr Eazi for influencing his confidence, business mindset and approach to the music industry, adding that they often share ideas beyond music.

He also spoke about his close relationships with R2Bees and Sarkodie, describing them as genuine friendships that have helped his journey.

Looking ahead, King Promise revealed he has big plans including new music, videos, an album and his Promise Land concert, with a possibility of dropping another song before the end of the year.
