Ghanaian Gospel Legend Bernice Offei Dies Aged 63

Ghanaian gospel music icon and veteran singer Bernice Offei has died. She passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 63.

Bernice Offei was highly revered for her soulful vocals, spiritual depth, and timeless songwriting that significantly shaped the landscape of Ghanaian gospel music over several decades.

She is best known for her hit songs Life Is Short, Hold On, Kaa She Gbeyei, Odo A Wodo Mi Nti, Nyame Kokroko, N’adom Ara Kwa, Don Bi Rebo, and Nyame Aye Bi Ama Yen.

Her sixth studio album, Life (2007), became a massive success. It swept major honours at the 2009 Ghana Music Awards, where she won Best Female Vocal Performance and Songwriter of the Year. The awards were then known as Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Beyond music, Bernice Offei was an accomplished academic and professional. She had her secondary education at Achimota School in Accra, earned an MPhil in Crop Science from the University of Ghana, and an MSc in Information Technology from a university in the United Kingdom. She also built a respected career in banking, working with Standard Chartered Bank.

She was married to Professor Samuel Kwame Offei, a former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, and they shared two children together.

Her death comes just days after a worrying episode earlier this month. The 63-year-old gospel legend was reported missing on September 1, 2026, after she was last seen around Nyaho-Tamakloe Street in Agbogba, Accra. The news sparked widespread concern, with fellow gospel stars Diana Hamilton and Empress Gifty sharing missing-person alerts.

She was found safe within 24 hours after a Found Person Notice was shared by Dr Yaw Perbi, bringing relief to family and fans. Now, just over a week after that incident, news of her passing has left the gospel fraternity in deep mourning.

Tributes have already started pouring in from gospel musicians, fans, and lovers of Ghanaian gospel music who grew up listening to her inspirational songs.

Ghana has lost a veteran voice, but the songs and ministry of Bernice Offei will live on for generations.
