I Don’t Want Anything To Do With NDC Again – Mzbel

Ghanaian musician Mzbel says she no longer wants to have anything to do with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or any political party, despite her long-standing support for the party.

According to the singer, her open affiliation with the NDC has cost her fans, shows and business opportunities, while also exposing her to insults and threats, including from some individuals within the party itself.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, Mzbel said her love for the NDC remains but she regrets the consequences of making her political stance public.

“I loved NDC. It doesn’t mean I hate NDC now, but I don’t want to have anything to do with any political party anymore. It has caused me more harm than good,” she said.

Mzbel explained that before openly declaring her support for the NDC, she had fans across the political divide, including supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She said she lost a significant portion of that fanbase after she became vocal about her affiliation and was dropped from events organized by persons linked to the NPP.

She recalled an incident where she was scheduled to perform at Movenpick but was removed from the line-up a few days to the event because a senior NPP figure was billed as guest of honour.

“A few days to the show, they called me that their guest of honour is one big NPP woman and because of her, they have to take me off the show,” she recounted.

The singer added that she also lost opportunities to perform outside Ghana after organizers cancelled her appearances even after promotional flyers bearing her image had been circulated.

“So if I didn’t come out to say that I am NDC, defending my party and all of that, I would have been doing well. I lost half of my fan base,” she said.

Mzbel further stated that her loyalty to the NDC did not shield her from attacks within the party.

She alleged that she was physically and verbally attacked, insulted on social media and threatened with violence by some party members.

“And the party I followed too, well, it didn’t do me any good. You know, because there are people in the party who physically and verbally attacked me, insulted me, called me out on social media, threatened to beat me, and all of that. So if these same people are NDC people and they are doing this to me on social media, I mean, why would anybody want to work with me?” she questioned.

Explaining the roots of her political affiliation, Mzbel said she grew up in Jamestown where former President Jerry John Rawlings and the NDC were highly revered.

“I just love the party because I grew up with the party. It was Rawlings and in Jamestown it’s all about Rawlings and NDC so it became like a religion for us,” she stated.

She noted that her political involvement deepened during election campaigns when she realized her comments often gained traction online, prompting her to use her platform to share messages from the party and promote its leadership.

“So I followed it passionately and I realised that during campaigns, anything I say goes viral. So I keep using my platform to be sharing stuff that, you know, whoever is leading the party then is promoting. And that is how it started,” she said.

Mzbel concluded that her experience has been disappointing and she has learned her lesson.
