Ghanaian media personality and lawyer Serwaa Amihere has come under heavy criticism on social media following remarks she made about fake designer items.

In a video that has since gone viral, Serwaa advised young women against purchasing imitation designer bags if they cannot afford the original products.

The comment sparked reactions from several female public figures who disagreed with her stance.

Socialite and actress Efia Odo was among the first to respond. In a video shared on X, she questioned why anyone should be concerned about another person choosing to buy a replica bag.

She said the focus in Ghana should not be on judging people by what they wear, but rather on their skills and qualifications. According to her, using a fake bag as a measure of someone’s worth or employability does not make sense.

Efia also argued that the cost of authentic designer bags is high, and that many jobs in Accra do not pay enough to afford them. She suggested that the conversation should instead focus on encouraging young people to look presentable within their means.

Musician Mzbel also shared her views on the matter. In a video posted online, she said people should not be judged by material possessions.

She noted that many fashion items used daily are not original, including beauty enhancements and accessories, and that forming opinions about someone based on their bag is unfair.

Socialite Afia Schwarzenegger also weighed in strongly against Serwaa. She shared a screenshot of an alleged old conversation from 2021 where Serwaa was said to be purchasing imitation jewellery.

Afia argued that Serwaa had once been in a similar position as the young women she is now criticising. She said the media personality should be more measured in her public comments and speak in a manner that reflects her background as a lawyer.

According to Afia, the issue of fake versus original items should not be used to look down on others, as not everyone can afford authentic luxury products.

The debate has since generated widespread discussion online, with many social media users sharing divided opinions on the subject.
